Keloid Scars

Keloid scars are one of the most serious types of abnormal scars, not just because of the scar, but also as a result of the feelings of self-consciousness and social anxiety as a result of the scar. While Keloid scars can occur at any age regardless of gender or skin pigment, they often develop in darker skinned individuals or younger people, and frequently, there is a family history of keloid development.  These scars are often very large and can occur almost anywhere on the body. While these scars are benign they can appear as a large tumor or cyst. Unlike other abnormal scars such as Hypertrophic scars, Keloid scars  grow beyond the border of the original scar, both upward and outward, coloration can be from red to brown,  the scar is typically hard, is frequently painful and is usually quite sensitive. This is because they are formed within the scar tissue and grow as a result of increased collagen production, which can continue for months after the skin trauma.  Keloid scars may not begin to develop until months after a skin trauma or could become more severe after pregnancy.

Typically, Keloid scars develop as a result of trauma to the skin such as a severe burn or cut. However, in some cases, Keloid scars can develop as a result of acne, or a simple puncture wound such as an ear or nose piercing. In rare cases, Keloid scars form as a result of a simple scratch. Essentially, any minor trauma to the skin has the potential to form a Keloid scar including acne scars, which affect millions of people worldwide.

If you or a loved one suffers from keloid scarring, then you understand the skin sensitivity, itchiness and mild pain associated with these types of scars. You know what it feels like to walk down the street and wonder if anyone notices your scar, and you’re probably asking “How do I get rid of this Keloid scar?”  There is hope and there are options for reducing the appearance of Keloid scars, so that you can get back to enjoying life again.

If you have a Keloid scar, there are a variety of ways to treat it including surgery and by applying a topical silicone scar management treatment gel. Unfortunately, surgery is the only sure way to completely remove a Keloid scar. However, many people choose not to have surgery due to the fact that more than 50% of the time, the surgery scar forms into another Keloid scar.  Silicone gel has been used since the 1980’s and has become the international medical standard for the management of scar treatments.

Silicone gel has been clinically tested for use on both old and new keloid scars resulting from surgeries, burns and other traumas.  The results have proven the efficacy of use for raised and/or reddish colored keloid scars, in some cases even scars more than 4 years old. Silicone gel may help to reduce skin sensitivity, itching, and irritation while softening and flattening the appearance of raised scars and the associated discoloration. 1, 2, 3.  There are many silicone gel products on the market but you want to ensure that you purchase a product which only contains medical-grade silicone gel without additives, such as Scarprin, which is easy to use and has been in business for over 10 years.  Make sure the company you purchase your product from is solid and ethical.  You don’t want to take chances with keloid scars.
