The Different Types of Surgery for Scar Removal
We can get scars in many different ways; from falling while learning to ride a bike to more serious injuries such as accidents or scars from acne. Not every scar is the same. Scars can be in many different shapes, sizes and depths. Whatever type of scar you have you may want to find the best way to help reduce its appearance. Surgical Scar Treatments Include:
- Dermabrasion: This scar treatment is usually done in a surgeon’s office or an outpatient facility. A local anesthetic is used to help numb the scarred area. An instrument with an abrasive wheel or brush is used to remove the epidermis layer of the skin. Once the procedure is done it will leave the skin feeling burned and red for a couple of weeks. Most patients that use dermabrasion require additional medication to help with the pain from the surgery. Dermabrasion is used mainly to help reduce the appearance of acne scars, scars from accidents and scars that occur from diseases such as chicken pox.
- Excision: This is a scar treatment method that is used mostly for acne scars or pitted scars. The process is done by cutting out the scar and suturing the skin together. While no scar can be completely removed, excision scar removal will make the scarred area smaller. Excision scar removal can also be used in conjunction with skin grafting.
- Skin Grafting: This scar treatment is used mostly for burn scars. While this process may help to reduce the appearance of a burn scar it will leave a scar in another unlikely place. Skin grafting is when you take skin from another area of the body and apply it over the burned area to help new skin to grow over it.

Using a scar removal cream or serum may be another way to help reduce the appearance of a scar. This is a method that can be done at home, may be more cost effective and will be able to show positive results in minimizing the appearance of a scar in as little as four weeks.
